Icelandic Turf House
Glaumbær
US$20.50
Íslandshús is a small series of houses inspired by Icelandic building tradition. The first dwellings of the settlers were built of turf and stone, building materials that were well known in northern Europe long before the settlement of Iceland. At first the houses were single hall houses, but in the 15th century people began to build several houses together and connect them with passages; that style of building was called a passage farm (gangabær). Late in the 18th century the gabled farmhouses (burstabæir) took over, and building houses of turf and stone finally died out at the beginning of the 20th century. Glaumbær in Skagafjörður is one of the best-known passage farms in the country and the model for this little house.
The houses look lovely on a windowsill, a bookshelf or a desk, on their own or all together in a tiny village.
