Icelandic Birds - Whimbrel
The whimbrel is a migratory bird and one of the larger wading birds in Iceland. Its curved bill is one of its main characteristics and serves it well for catching various small creatures such as insects and snails. The whimbrel is common all over the country and keeps mostly to the lowlands. It stays in Iceland from May until September, when it heads south and then lives mainly on the west coast of Africa and in Portugal. Nearly half of the population is thought to breed in Iceland in summer.
