Icelandic Birds - Arctic Tern
The Arctic tern is a migratory bird and travels farther than any other bird that comes to Iceland in summer. The Arctic tern is thought to fly about 40,000 km a year on its journeys, all the way from South Africa, Antarctica and Australia to various nesting sites in the Arctic; besides Iceland, it nests in Svalbard and Greenland, among other places. The Arctic tern is agile in flight and hunts by diving for its food, often from some height. It is known for defending its nests and chicks against uninvited guests and does not hesitate to attack from the air anyone who ventures too close to its young.
