Icelandic Birds – Ptarmigan, hand-carved wooden bird

NOM-306
US$34.50

The ptarmigan (rjúpa) from Icelandic Birds by nomad is a hand-carved, hand-painted wooden bird on a small stand, Icelandic design by Ingimar Þórhallsson and Halla Líf Hjálmarsdóttir. Each bird is unique and comes in a gift box with a description in Icelandic and English.

The ptarmigan is the only gallinaceous bird that lives wild in Iceland. It is a resident bird; the male is sometimes called "karri" and the female a hen or "rjúpa". The ptarmigan changes its plumage with the seasons: in winter it is white, in summer mottled brown. It is a herbivore and feeds on leaves and berries in summer, while in winter it turns to evergreen leaves and buds. It is found all over the country and is most common in the Þingeyjarsýslur districts.

A lovely gift for bird lovers, and a small piece of Icelandic nature to take home.
