Icelandic Birds – Golden Plover, hand-carved wooden bird

NOM-301
US$34.50

The golden plover (lóa) from Icelandic Birds by nomad is a hand-carved, hand-painted wooden bird on a small stand, Icelandic design by Ingimar Þórhallsson and Halla Líf Hjálmarsdóttir. Each bird is unique and comes in a gift box with a description in Icelandic and English.

The golden plover is among the first migratory birds to arrive in Iceland, and is first seen early in April. It is a medium-sized wader, considerably smaller than the whimbrel. The golden plover is a fast flier and can also move quickly when running on the ground. It is perhaps best known for the song it sings in the breeding season – "dírrin-dí" or "dýrðin-dýrðin". The golden plover leaves the country fairly late in autumn and may stay as late as the end of October, when it heads south and spends the winter months mainly in the British Isles, though it also travels south along the coasts of France and Portugal.

A lovely gift for bird lovers, and a small piece of Icelandic nature to take home.
